Cello Teachers

Jonathan C. Kramer is Associate Professor of Arts Studies at North Carolina State University and Adjunct Professor of Ethnomusicology at Duke University. Dr. Kramer holds advanced degrees from Duke and the Graduate School of the Union Institute where he completed a Ph.D. in Ethnomusicology and Performance Studies in 1994 with a dissertation on traditional Korean music. As a cellist, he has performed as principal of the Tucson Symphony and as a member of the San Francisco Opera and Ballet Orchestras and the North Carolina Symphony; and in solo and chamber music recitals throughout the U.S. as well as in Russia, India, Korea, Canada, Austria, Bulgaria, U. K. and Italy. He has been awarded Senior Fulbright Fellowships at Banaras-Hindu University in India and at Chosun University in Kwangju, South Korea. He is on the teaching faculty of the North Carolina School of the Arts Summer Institute and frequently accompanies Rumi translator Coleman Barks in poetry readings. Dr. Kramer has lectured on Music and Aesthetics in the United States, the U. K., Korea, and recently at the Ramakrishna Mission in Calcutta (Kolkata), India. He has presented a performance piece Homage to Pau Casals: Artist of Conscience with cellists Bernard Greenhouse and Selma Gokcen. at Queen Elizabeth Hall, London and the 92nd ST. Y, Manhattan,

David Oh is a native of South Korea where he began his cello studies at age of eight. He came to the States when he was fifteen with his family. Mr. Oh studied at the Eastman School of Music and the Saint Louis Conservatory of Music, where he earned Bachelor of Music in cello performance. He earned his Master of Music in cello performance at East Carolina University. He has participated in Spoleto Music festival and the Los Angeles Institute of Music where he served as a principal cellist. He frequently appears with the North Carolina Symphony, and is principal cellist in the Raleigh Civic Symphony Orchestra and the Raleigh Civic Chamber Orchestra. Bass Teachers

Leonid Finkelshteyn, Principal Double Bass of the North Carolina Symphony, is a native of Leningrad (now St. Petersburg) in the former Soviet Union. He began his music education at age 6 on the piano. At the age of 13 he began his studies of the double bass while enrolled at the Special Music School of the Leningrad Conservatory. At the age of 19, while an undergrad at Leningrad Conservatory of Music, he won a position in the Symphony Orchestra of the Leningrad Philharmonic. Two years later he was a prize winner in the Soviet Union Double Bass Competition. Finkelshteyn completed his Master of Music Degree and graduated with honors from the Conservatory in 1986. He was a member of the Symphony Orchestra of the Leningrad Philharmonic for seven years, working his way up from section player to Assistant Principal and finally to Principal Double Bass before emigrating to the United States in 1990.
During the summer of 1991 Finkelshteyn attended the Aspen Music Festival where he won the concerto competition and performed the Koussevitzky Concerto for Double Bass with the Aspen Festival Sinfonia. He then settled in Chicago where he performed with numerous groups including the Chicago Symphony, Lyric Opera and the Milwaukee Symphony. Finkelshteyn joined the North Carolina Symphony in 1996. During the summer months he is also Principal Bass of the Eastern Music Festival in Greensboro, NC and of the Peninsula Music Festival in Door County, Wisconsin. He is a member of the string faculty at East Carolina University in Greenville, NC, a position he has held since 1996. Finkelshteyn performs numerous chamber music recitals as well as solo appearances in North Carolina and in Wisconsin.

Bob Anderson provides double-bass lessons and rentals. Mr. Anderson is Assistant Principal Double-bass with the N.C. Symphony. He has played and taught at the Eastern Music Festival, Cannon Music Camp, and played in numerous organizations in NC and beyond. He is a graduate of the Eastman School of Music and attended The Tanglewood Festival. Mr. Anderson has private students ranging from beginner to advanced. He gives lessons in 1/2, 3/4 and full hour lengths and uses traditional methods. He has five high quality student basses to rent. They run from 1/4 to 3/4 (standard) sizes. Erik Dyke welcomes beginner students to the string bass. A member of the NC Symphony since 1978, he is familiar with a variety of musical styles. Students should have their own instrument to practice on and be able to demonstrate basic musical skills. Contact Erik Dyke here
