Frequently Asked Questions

Q. At what age is it best to start violin lessons?

A. When the child expresses an interest is a good time to consider starting lessons. I have taught those as young as five years old with reasonable success. At this age, the parent will be present at all lessons and learn, along with the child, what needs to be practiceed; but it is not necessary for the parent to learn the instrument as well.

Q. I have heard there are different sizes of violins. How do I know which one to get for my child?

A. Sizing should be done at the shop where you intend to rent the instrument. The terms of the rental usually include sizing up as the child grows.

Q. How much will all this cost?

A. Instrument rentals are available at very reasonable prices. (Please see INSTRUMENTS/MUSIC page for rental information and recommendations.) My fees for private lessons are $50 per hour, $40.00 per 45 minutes, $30.00 per 30 minutes.

Q. Where are you located?

A. I have a private studio in my home near the Raleigh Art Museum and Rex Hospital. I also have studios at Music & Arts at Crossroads in Cary and at Durham Arts Council School.

Q. How much practice time is necessary?

A. It is difficult to put a time minimum or maximum on practice time. However, it is possible to make advancement with as little as 30 minutes (15 minutes for the very young student) a day, if it is well-spent.

Q. As a parent, what should my involvement be?

A. Make sure your child has all the needed materials before leaving home for the lesson. Help your child allot the time needed each day to practice. Provide a private room with a music stand and a mirror. Younger students may require supervision during practice.

Q. What activities are available for students of stringed instruments?

A. The Triangle is lucky to boast wonderful opportunities for students to play in student ensembles. More info here at Area Youth Orchestras.
